Retention

After any orthodontic treatment no matter what the method used, teeth will try to go back to where they were. This is known as relapse. To avoid this you will need to retain the teeth in their new position. There are a number of ways for doing this such as:

  • A Bonded Retainer – a piece of wire that is cemented to the back of the teeth permanently
  • A Removable Retainer – A clear plastic tray that fits over your teeth to be worn at night time

The need to retain the teeth may lessen over time, the important thing here is to understand that retention will be required and to follow your dentists advice as to what method, how often and for how long.
